Technical Application Notes


Situation:

Technicians in an industrial plant need to know when a belt has broken on any of the exhaust fans in their building. Sometimes the exhaust fan stops completely after belt breakage, but usually it continues rotating because of a backdraft. The motor runs and the exhaust fan rotates, but independent of each other.


Solution 1:

Mount a Magnetic Disk or a single magnet to the shaft on the exhaust fan and align a ZS09R Zero Speed Switch Sensor to the Magnetic Disk.


Solution 2:

Align a ZS09R Zero Speed Switch Sensor to a low carbon steel bolt head.

Adjust the ZS09R Zero Speed Switch Sensor trip point for under speed condition. When the fan speed drops below normal operating speed, the ZS09R Zero Speed Switch Sensor signals the PLC, indicating a broken belt.
